Have you heard anyone say, “It’s all in your mind” when you are experiencing real pain or distress?
Although it may sound harsh, there is some truth in that statement. Some people can undergo the most difficult of experiences, and emerge as compassionate human beings with rewarding lives, while other people in similar circumstances remain stuck in depression, negativity and fear. Why is that?
Our thoughts impact on our bodies.
It’s well known that our environment can have an impact on the development of the cells in our bodies. Chemicals in the atmosphere, too much direct sun, repetitive noises – there are many things that influence the structure and function of our bodies.
It’s now being recognized that thoughts and attitudes also influence cell structure and function. Dr Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist, found that genes (inside cells) can be turned on and off by environmental signals including thoughts, feelings and emotions from outside the cell. Dr Lipton’s work focuses on the mechanisms through which energy in the form of our beliefs can affect our biology, including our genetic code.
Stress and distress create the release of a whole range of chemical reactions based on our natural survival instinct. When an increased level of distress becomes normal, our body systems “forget” how to turn off and return to calm, even when there is no longer any danger. It becomes difficult to concentrate and feel motivated, there are headaches and bodily aches and pains, peaceful restful sleep is impossible, and tempers flare easily.
People who thrive in spite of awful circumstances are those who learn how to turn off the body’s “fight/flight/freeze” response when it is not needed, and whose systems return to a calm state of balance and equilibrium. They can think clearly, relax and sleep easily, and their immune system functions well.
Don’t believe everything you think. Your mind can heal you or kill you.
I work with people to remove the negative thoughts and deep core beliefs which keep them stuck in anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. And then I help them create an amazing future for themselves.
Are you stuck? Are you sick of it?
